Description
This piece was originally slated for inclusion in Opening Doors, my in-progress collection of elementary pieces in unusual keys for adult beginners and other developing pianists, but was ultimately determined to be a little more difficult than what I had in mind for the set. Thus, it is currently a stand-alone work.
This piece invokes a dramatic opera scene, and in fact, very astute listeners might spot a quote from a real opera aria within it. (I won’t spoil it by revealing where or from which opera.) Several of my adult students have an additional interest in the opera literature, something that most pedagogical works don’t tap into, so I wanted to provide such students with a piece that would allow for dramatic expression without introducing all the problems of questionably accurate or absurdly difficult aria arrangements for solo piano.
